Game Recap - 9/18/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 4 (85-64), Mets 2 (74-75) WP: Hudson (16-8) LP: Gee (1-1) SV: Wagner (35) Today was a solid win...the offense put some runs on the board, Tim Hudson was good (though not great), and the Braves get a series victory and will look for the sweep tomorrow. We'll start with Tim Hudson...he allowed a pair of solo homers that accounted for all of the Mets scoring, but aside from that, he was great: 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in 7 innings while getting 12 ground ball outs. God I love when that happens. Aside from those 2 jacks to right field by Jose Reyes and Luis Hernandez...it was a solid start. 2 double plays for Hudson helped matters. The bullpen threw a pair of scoreless, including a dominant 3 strikeout performance by Billy Wagner in the 9th. Man, he's been a hell of a signing, hasn't he? Offensively, the Braves got 4 runs...all they needed. The big blow was a 2 run double by Alex Gonzalez in the 4th that broke a 1-1 tie...that ball was probably gone at Turner Field, thanks to the high fences all over the place at Citi Field. Gonzalez would also double in the 9th...another ball that would have been out at Turner. Speaking of being out at Turner...Nate McLouth drove in Derrek Lee for the first Braves run in the second inning on a double that...would have been out at Turner Field. He didn't screw around in the 9th, and hit one that WAS out at Citi Field. So a pair of extra base hits and RBI for McLouth and Gonzalez...Gonzalez needs to get going, and McLouth has been the team's best hitter, and should be playing every day. Gonzalez also walked to add to his stat line. The only other Brave to reach multiple times was Lee, who singled twice. He's been playing well lately...another guy that needs to keep things up if the team wants to be playing deep into October. Tomorrow, the Braves look for a sweep heading into Philly, and send the all of a sudden red hot Derek Lowe to the mound to take on the Mets' surprise of the year, RA Dickey. Looking at the playoff picture, Philly plays Washington tonight, and the Padres just took a 7-4 lead on the Cardinals in the 9th inning. The Rockies obliterated the Dodgers today. So everything would stay the same if the results hold...eh, whatever.
