Game Recap - 9/27/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 2 (88-69), Marlins 1 (77-79) WP: Dunn (2-0) LP: Veras (3-3) The bright spot tonight for the Braves was pitching. It was a shame the team couldn't get Tommy Hanson the win, but in the end, a walkoff single by Omar Infante in the 11th gave the team a win, which in the long run, is all that really matters. The Braves just need to win, win, win down the stretch. Tonight, Hanson came to party. He threw 7 scoreless innings before allowing a sole run in the 8th after a single by Mike Stanton, a stolen base, and a bloop double into left that Nate McLouth came thisclose to making the catch on. The bullpen relieved Hanson with 2 outs in the 8th, and pitched well. Jonny Venters got out of the 8th with a strikeout, Billy Wagner dominated in the 9th inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep the game alive, Peter Moylan threw a great 1 2/3 innings, striking out 2 and allowing a couple of baserunners, and Mike Dunn got out of Moylan's jam with a big 11th inning strikeout. Offensively...blegh. The team went 1/7 with runners in scoring position tonight, 1/4 after the 8th inning...the 1 of course, was Infante's single to left in the 11th to end the game. There were chances to get runs. The Braves stranded 2 in the first, 2 in the eighth, and 3 in the 9th before putting 2 more on in the 11th and getting the win. They couldn't manage a walk until the 8th inning, but started bringing them in once that inning began. Infante had himself a nice night, with a pair of hits and a walk. Brian McCann got the scoring started with a solo homer in the 4th. Flyballs were dying on the track all night...it was getting real frustrating to see a ball hit really well, and just die at the warning track. McCann added a walk to his homer. Nate McLouth reached twice, as did Rick Ankiel. Hey look at that, outfield production that isn't from Jason Heyward! He went 1/5 with a couple of strikeouts. Derrek Lee had a really bad night: 0/5 with 3 strikeouts, and 2 failures with runners in scoring position. One bad note from the game. After an outstanding diving catch in the 4th where he landed on his hip, Martin Prado aggravated the injury swinging in the bottom of the 5th and was forced to leave the game. Early word is that he's got a hip pointer and is day to day. Its not great to have another injury this late in the season, but Prado's been playing hurt. He needs time off, even if this is a critical time. Brooks Conrad will probably be in the lineup tomorrow, and I'd expect to see things shuffled up a little bit, another thing that needs to happen. Speaking of tomorrow's game. Tim Hudson will be going on 3 days rest and facing Anibal Sanchez for Florida. He's 1-1 with a no decision against the Braves this season and has a 3.92 ERA, 17 strikeouts, and 9 walks against the good guys. He's got a 6.95 ERA in September. That's a good sign. The Phillies clinched the division tonight, so our sole focus is the NL Wild Card race...and the Padres are losing 1-0 through 7 to the Cubs. If they lose, the Braves go a half game up. A win keeps the Braves a half game out. I will not be staying up for the end of the game...too much drama for one night.
