Game Recap - 9/8/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 9 (80-60), Pirates 3 (47-92) WP: Lowe (12-12) LP: Duke (7-13) Hey look...offense! I'm actually a little angry about this offensive performance though...despite cranking out 9 runs, 14 hits and 20 baserunners, the Braves only had one extra base hit...and it led off the inning...and it was by the pitcher. When you put 20 men on base, you should have more than 9 runs on the board. 13 men were stranded. 13! If no runs were put on the board, fans would be whining...but apparently, this can be ignored because the team scored a little. Hell, I'd rather see MORE carnage and less stranded. You cannot let up, you NEED to put runs on the board like crazy to show that you can. Lets talk about offensive stars tonight...Derrek Lee, who was getting absolutely shredded on Twitter this afternoon, walked twice and hit a pair of singles, along with driving in a pair. Alex Gonzalez and Melky Cabrera each also had a pair of hits, while Martin Prado and Jason Heyward had a pair and a walk. Omar Infante got 3 hits for the hell of it too. Contributions by most everyone tonight. Pitching? When you get 8 runs over the first 3 innings, you sure as hell better not be pitching with a lot of pressure on your shoulders. Derek Lowe delivered tonight, allowing 1 earned over 6 strong innings, scattering 6 hits while not walking a batter and striking out 2. Not great...but hell, 1 run. Big improvement on his last couple of starts. Mike Dunn and Scott Proctor each threw a perfect inning with a pair of K's. Cristhian Martinez struggled in the 9th, allowing a pair in a rare ineffective outing. Billy Wagner struck out Neil Walker on 3 pitches to end the game, because it was getting a little dicey. Phillies won, so they're still up a half game in the east. That lead will hopefully be gone tomorrow with a Braves win over the Cardinals, since Philly is idle. I was dreading the Cardinals series when I saw it on the schedule...not anymore. That team is struggling, and an absolute mess right now. Doozy of a pitching matchup tomorrow...Adam Wainwright and Jair Jurrjens. That's gonna be a good one. The game will be on MLB Network for those of us not in the Atlanta or St Louis markets...which I am not. Did I complain about not being able to watch any of these Pirates games? God bless Comcast and arcane MLB blackout rules.
