News & Notes - 8/30/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Tidbits before this evening's series opener against the Mets... -In the big news of the day, Kenshin Kawakami was recalled from Gwinnett, and Cristhian Martinez was demoted. I assume this move is due to Martinez throwing 4 innings yesterday, and the team wanting a fresh arm in the bullpen before rosters expand. Bad thing about this: Martinez will need to spend the rest of Gwinnett's season down there before being able to get recalled. So that means that he won't be back until next week...again, not a huge deal, but he was pitching effectively lately. Here's hoping Kawakami is able to hold the fort down if there are any blowouts this week. -Why was Peter Moylan not pitching a lot this past week? He had a cortisone shot in his right shoulder on Friday. This explains the move was made to bring Craig Kimbrel up for a couple of days. Kimbrel was demoted Sunday, and Mike Minor was brought back from the GCL. Kimbrel is in the same boat as Martinez now...can't be called up until Gwinnett's season ends. -Derrek Lee is back in the lineup tonight, and will be hitting cleanup. I outlined in HOT or NOT earlier this afternoon why Brian McCann should be cleaning up...if you missed it, McCann's got an OPS 200 points higher when he's hitting 4th than when he's hitting 5th. Thought that was a neat little tidbit...I don't know why you'd want to mess with McCann and how he's hitting now, but whatever. I'm the one sitting behind a keyboard in Pennsylvania instead of an office at Turner Field. -Talk is heating up that Freddie Freeman will be recalled on Wednesday. Well, wouldn't that be interesting? Would he rot on the bench, or actually be allowed to start at first? I also made a tad bit of an error when talking about postseason rosters...if you're not on the 40-man on September 1, you can be put on the playoff roster if you take the position of someone on the 60-day DL that plays the same position...its not the same exact position. Its position player for position player, and pitcher for pitcher...IE, Chipper Jones could be placed on the 60-day, and Freeman could replace Chipper on the roster. If they're going to call Freeman up and actually let him play, it would essentially be admitting that the Lee trade was a complete failure, and that the Braves gave up 3 live, young arms for nothing. Enjoy the game tonight...hopefully I'll be back in 5 hours talking about a glorious buttwhooping of the Mets.
